Huawei MediaPad Review

The Huawei MediaPad skimps on almost no ingredient in a bid to challenge the best 7" tablets out there. Sure, it would have been great to have Android ICS out of the box, but the screen has WXGA resolution and 216ppi pixel density - almost as high as the 10.1" Asus Transformer Prime TF700T and its 224ppi 1920x1200 screen.
Not impressed yet? How about an aluminum unibody that's thinner and lighter than the plasticy Kindle Fire? What about some of these specs:

Sony Xperia P Hands-on

The Sony Xperia P, which was once known only by its Nypon code name, was one of the smartphones that we were expecting to see at CES 2012. Of course, that didn't happen. Today, however, we are finally given the opportunity to go up close and personal with this mid- to high-range offering by Sony.

The design is in line with the rest of the new Xperia gang – the P is made predominantly of plastic, and features the characteristic transparent line near the capacitive navigation keys. Overall, the Xperia P is one good-looking device, although it won't win an award for exceptional thinness due to its 10.5 mm.

It goes without saying that the 4-inch qHD display on the Sony Xperia P is one of its standout features. Enhanced with WhiteMagic technology, it delivers an impressive brightness of 1000 nits, meaning that it should remain clearly visible even in broad daylight. Since we tested the device indoors, we can't vouch for the brightness of the display, but we'll be sure to check this out once we get a unit for a review.

Providing the Sony Xperia P with processing power is a 1GHz dual-core processor, courtesy of ST-Ericsson. During our brief time with the handset, we didn't encounter much lag while playing with the interface. However, we should mention that these weren't final units we got to play with, plus the handset will be updated to Android 4 ICS (it will launch with Gingerbread). The update is scheduled for this Spring.
Other noteworthy features include an 8 megapixel camera, a VGA FF one, as well as the usual suspects like Wi-Fi, DLNA, and GPS.

HTC One V Hands-on Review

And lastly, the HTC One V is the entry level addition to the HTC line-up at MWC.

As such, it's packs a 1GHz single-core yet unspecified CPU Snapdragon S2 processor, 512MB of RAM and a 3.7-inch WVGA LCD display. The One V runs Ice Cream Sandwich, but unlike it's fellow relatives from the One family, which run Sense 4.0, the One V is coated with the older Sense 3.6.

At the back there's a 5MP camera with autofocus and f/2.0 lens recording 720p videos. Unfortunately, HTC has omitted the front-facing camera on the One V. Storage is limited to just 4GB sans microSD card slot, but a deal with HTC and Dropbox comes to the rescue. It gives users 25GB of free Dropbox online storage for 2 years.
A 1500mAh battery will give the phone its power juices while a quadband GSM and WCDMA radios will take care of the telephony. The One V also packs GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

HTC One S Hands-on Review

The One S is the slimmer brother of the One X and as it happens is the thinnest phone HTC has ever produced.


Slimmer, but also less powerful, it's powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor on the MSM8260A platform thus making it more of a mid-range model, rather than a truly fledged flagship.
Still, the One S is packing a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display and an 8MP shooter at the back with an f/2.0 lens and a LED flash. The audio of the One S is enhanced by Beats Audio as well.

   
The One S is built around HTC's usual aluminum unibody design and is just 7.6mm thick. HTC has gone the extra mile by giving the One S a crystaline ceramic metal finish, which is achieved by baking the aluminum in plasma. This whole process transforms the aluminum into ceramic making it 4 times harder and scratch resistant.

HTC One X Hands-on Review

You should already be quite familiar with the One X with its many leaks prior to MWC, but now let's run over the official specifications of the Taiwanese flagship.

The One X is the most powerful Android smartphone HTC have built to date and it's built around a 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 display sporting a 720p (1280x720 pixels) resolution. A 1.5GHz quad-core Tegra 3 chip for the global edition of the phone and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core for the LTE variant coupled with 1GB of RAM will be making sure Android 4.0 Ice Scream Sandwich is running at its best with no apps making it think twice.
At the back, the One X sports an 8MP snapper, which packs a special Dual Shutter camera module, which allows you to take photos while shooting 1080p video at the same time. We are quite impressed. And the main camera itself rocks a 22mm wide angle lens, f/2.0 aperture and a BSI sensor. Face and smile detection are on board as well as burst shooting mode up to 5fps.

Storage on the One X is limited to 32GB with no microSD card on board, but HTC compensates its lack with 25GB of free Dropbox storage for two years. NFC, DLNA, Bluetooth 3, Wi-Fi N, 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB with MHL are on board, too. Oh, and it's also got Beats Audio enhancement, so music through that 3.5mm jack should sound extra nice.
The display of the One X is covered in 3D Gorilla Glass, which is another way of saying the screen glass is tapered on the edges as on the Nokia N9 and Lumia 800. The whole body of the phone is one piece of polycarbonate plastic, just like the N9. It's quite slim, too, measuring only 9,29mm. Impressive for a 720p screen, Tegra 3-packing (or Snapdragon S4-packing) Droid.

Acer Iconia Tablet Coming in March

We now have a few more details on the latest Acer tablet which the company recently teased us with back in CES 2012, the Iconia Tab A510. So now we have more than just the specs, we also have the target release date and price.

The details we got about the tablet include it being operated on 1.3GHz quad-core by a NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip. The tablet also has a 10-inch 1280x800p display. But even though these make up for a different breed of Acer tablets, the highest point of the device is the 9800 mAh battery; which can produce 18 hours of battery life on just a single charge.

Other specs found in the Iconia Tab A510 include 5mp front-facing camera, 1GB RAM, 32GB storage, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a microSD card slot. It will also run on Android 4.0 when it launches.

As for its price, we’re looking at around $527 for the tablet.  It will be released in March.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean Released Soon

The well-connected guys at Digitimes feed the mill once more with a rumor that slates the next iteration of Android for the second quarter of 2012. According to their sources in the bustling Taiwanese manufacturing sector, Google plans to move fast with Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, driven by the relatively slow adoption of Ice Cream Sandwich, but also by the looming launch of Windows 8.

The news snippet is scarce in details, but a couple of important things pop out. One, Google is likely to specifically push Jelly Bean for tablet devices. Two, the guys in Mountain View would love to steal some of Windows 8’s thunder by enabling easy dual-boot on Windows 8 tablets.

Another charge in the tablet wars

So far, the results of Google’s efforts in the tablet area have been less than stellar. For some reason (price, fragmentation, public perception, marketing), Android-powered tablets haven’t been exactly flying of the shelves.

Ice Cream Sandwich is still too new to make a dent in iPad’s dominance. While most of the big names have announced that ICS will come to their devices, only a few tablets sport it already.

Understandably, Samsung, HTC, and other Google manufacturing partners are a bit wary when it comes to yet another version of Android. Even Motorola, soon to become even closer to Google, and one of the early adopters of ICS, has announced that its ICS rollout will only gather steam by Q2 2012, and will probably end in late autumn.

With all the problems created by a fast release cycle, Google can’t afford to waste any time. Apple will probably announce the iPad 3 this Spring, which will bolster its position in the tablet market even further. Plus, there is a wildcard in the game – Windows 8 is also expected to hit the markets later this year.

Will Jelly Bean borrow from Chrome OS to fight Windows 8?

Microsoft hopes to grab a piece of the tablet pie when it releases its revamped Windows 8. According to Digitimes, Google will fight back by integrating technology from Chrome OS into Jelly Bean, which would enable manufacturers to deliver tablets (and notebooks) running both Windows 8 and Android 5.0. Moreover, users will be able to quickly switch between the two operating systems, even without rebooting the device.

The Chromebook line is another area where Google needs a breath of fresh air. Launched with fanfare last year, the Chrome-running notebooks haven’t take off at all. The recent wave of Ultrabooks makes Google’s mission even harder. Jelly Bean may help here too.

To conclude, Google has a lot at stake with the new Android 5.0. The success of this new version may finally give the Mountain View giant the foothold it needs to fight Apple’s iPad. The arrival of Windows 8 may complicate things even further. No matter what happens, we can’t wait to see how Jelly Bean looks and feels.

How to take Screen Shot in Android Devices

I could have done an introduction post but I’ll pass with that one this time and get down to business right away. Android is fabulous. I think it has fantastic future. With more and more devices adopting the opensource platform offered by Google, there’s a race out there for writing applications for Android. I’d like to start of this blog by writing a post on how to take screenshots of your android phone. Yes there are some applications out there which do the job but require root access. We’ll be seeing a more native and fool proof method of taking screenshots on you android screens.

1. Make sure you have Java Runtime Installed. If you don’t get it first and install it (Download link at the end of the post).

2. Connect your phone to your computer using your data cable.

If it is your first time connecting to computer using data cable, you’ll be prompted with installing drivers. I am using Windows 7 so I’ll focus on using your Android phone with Windows 7.

3. Once the phone is connected and all the drivers are installed, staying on the home screen click the menu button and navigate to

Settings > Application > Development and check the checkbox which reads USB debugging.

4. Now we need download what is called as Android SDK. (Download link at the end of the post)

5. Once downloaded, extract the content to some folder.

6. Go to the folder inside the Android SDK folder and navigate into the folder named tools.

7. Double click the file named ddms. This should open a window titled Dalvik Debug Monitor and will show your android device.

8. Click on the device menu and select screencapture to start capturing screens from your android phone.

Everytime you have to capture a new screen, click Refresh button. Click save to save the file to a specified location. Following is a sample screenshot of my home screen.

Motorola's First Intel Powered Android 4.0 Mobile

At CES last month, Motorola and Intel made an announcement for a multi-year, multi-device partnership. Less than a month later, the two companies are ready to unveil the very first device from that partnership—slated for the Mobile World Congress happening in Barcelona just a few days away.

As of this writing, there has been no official information about said device. But luckily, PocketNow’s Evan Blass shared the very first photo of the device. He also shared that the camera of the unit will be its major selling point; especially its 15 frame-per-second burst capture. Now we’re excited to see what it’s all about!

Blass also shared that the unit is Motorola’s first Android ICS-powered smartphone. Additionally, this is also one of the first Motorola smartphone to have Intel-powered hardware. Check out Lenovo’s Intel powered Android phone in the video below. It was quite responsive, despite being single core. Either way, it’s a good sign that things are likely to get more competitive, which means TI, NVIDIA, ARM, and Qualcomm are going to be upping their offerings, which, as always, will be a good thing for consumers.

Wallpaper Changer for Android Device

Wallpaper Changer is an android application which helps rotate wallpapers on your android device. Now you dont have to manually change wallpapers and don’t have to live with the same wallpaper on your device. It also allows you to have a widget and with one click you can change the wallpaper without going to the settings to change the wallpaper.

You can also set timer to automatically change the wallpapers. Images can easily be added to the rotation list by using the Android Gallery app, to change the widget icon press the menu button in the app and select “Preferences”.

Google Android Based Home Entertainment System

Google is developing a home-entertainment system to stream music wirelessly throughout a users’ houses, The Wall Street Journal reports. The device will be Google-branded, marking a first for the search giant which historically develops software it then licenses to outside vendors. The system will most likely be Android-powered and will allow users to download music and stream it to Google-made speakers or other Web-connected devices in a home or office.

The system may also be able to stream other digital media beyond just music. Apple, one of Google’s main rivals, has long developed both the hardware and software for its products. With its pending acquisition of Motorola Mobility, Google is looking to make waves in the hardware sector as well, and this new home entertainment solution could be one of the first own-brand devices to launch following the approval of Google’s Motorola buy, which is expected to come next week. The Android-powered entertainment system will reportedly be available later this year.

Samsung Android 4.0 Tablet

Samsung is no slouch when it comes to producing smaller tablets — their first foray into the Android tab market was the 7-inch Galaxy Tab, and they recently revisited that form factor with the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. In fact, Samsung seems to love the concept of a 7-inch tablet so much that they have announced their first Ice Cream Sandwich-powered tablet will be the (take a guess!) 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2.

While the news of a new Android 4.0 tablet is enough to get some gadget fans all hot and bothered, the Galaxy Tab 2′s spec sheet doesn’t illustrate much technical improvement over its forebears. It features the same sort of 7-inch PLS display and 4,000 mAh battery as the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, not to mention that they both sport a 3-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front-facer.

What’s more, the processor actually looks like a bit of a step down on paper: the Galaxy Tab 2 touts a 1 GHz dual-core processor, as opposed to the 1.2 GHz processor in the 7.0 Plus. I’m sure Samsung had their reasons for running with a different chipset — better battery life, or perhaps improved performance thanks to a new SoC — but it’s still a bit odd to see a major player kick off their new line of Android 4.0 tablets without something more flashy.

And maybe that’s part of the plan. More than a few people have pointed out that Amazon’s own wallet-friendly 7-inch tablet has been immensely popular, which may be putting pressure on other companies to try and strike a precarious balance between price and performance. I’m looking forward to seeing how exactly Samsung will try and position their the little bugger, and the wait shouldn’t be too bad. The Galaxy Tab will officially debut first in the UK next month, and will presumably begin its world tour not too long afterwards.

FTL Launcher for Android Devices

If you don't like your custom UI or you just want to change the way your Android phone looks, feels and behaves, you can easily do that and this is the beauty of Android, among other things. Certainly there's no shortage of third party launchers out there but the new FTL Launcher claims it's "the fastest launcher you'll ever run".

There are two versions of the app, a free (light) and a paid one. It is based on Gingerbread Launcher2 source code, tweaked for extreme speed and features four customizable quick launch apps in the lower dock as well as three, five, seven or nine home screens. Upcoming HTC Endeavor Specification Leaked

The HTC Edge we've seen leaked in November of last year was renamed to HTC Endeavour, as reports indicate. It is expected to be a flagship Android phone with the nVidia Tegra 3 quad-core chip at its core.

A leaked HTC Endeavour ROM has been posted on XDA Developers and it not only confirms Sense 4.0 but also some of its rumored specs, like the 720p resolution screen. The build.prop file also contains references to the Tegra chipset, Dropbox integration, eight megapixel camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facer, WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and the "Endeavor" name. The platform seems to be Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich but if you're a techy person head over to the source link and check out the goodies yourself.

As far as the phone is concerned, we're waiting for HTC to unveil the device, together with some other phones and tablets at next week's MWC in Barcelona.

Samsung will release 3D mobile This Year

Are transformed in the years created creations also increased. Especially with the growing market of high competition, high levels of creativity that is needed. Therefore, Korean company Samsung is planning its latest mobile designs with different designs introduction in 2012.
In 2012, Samsung plans to release a 3D-enabled mobile phone. The plan would add a number of 3D handsets already on the market, including HTC LG Optimus 3D and EVO.

There was no official confirmation of the Samsung. But probably this phone has a sticker Galaxy, and if that's true, then the name of the phone is the possibility of 3D Galaxy. In addition, the 3D mobile phone from Samsung is also said to offer dual-camera functionality. As a 3D screen, the camera is also capable of recording 3D videos.

1. Search Regex – This adds extremely powerful search and replace capabilities to your blog. You can find and replace almost any kind of data stored on your WordPress site including post titles, excerpts, comments, and meta data. It even supports regular expressions.

2. Redirection – If the URL of an existing post has changed or if an external site is linking to a non-existent page on my site, I can create redirection rules and automatically forward all the incoming traffic to the right pages.

3. Bing 404 – If someone lands on a 404 page for which redirection is not yet enabled, this plug-in will display links to relevant article on the error page. For example, a 404 page like labnol.org/googledocs will have links to my Google Docs articles.

4. WordPress SEO – This is probably the only SEO plugin you need for your WordPress blog. It helps you create better titles, you can block duplicate pages (like archive pages) from search bots, and it also adds the necessary meta tags required for more search-friendly Google snippets.

5. WP Optimize – Use the WP Optimize plugin to clean-up your WordPress database tables. It can remove post revisions, trash spam comments and also optimize your MySQL tables so that it works more efficiently and also consumes less space.

6. FB Open Graph – This plugin will insert the necessary Open Graph meta tags to your blog’s header so that you blog posts look good and have the right snippets when they are shared on Facebook or Google Plus.

7. 404 Email Notifier – This sends you an email notification as soon as a visitor lands on a 404 page on your WordPress website. The email messages have details about the visitor’s IP address, what browser they are using and the referral URL that led him to that broken link.

11. YARRP – The related posts plug-in adds links to old stories that may be contextually related to the content of the current story. It also helps expose your archived content to search bots.

12. WP-DBManager – This plugin will help you backup your WordPress database manually or you can set up a scheduled job for automatic backup and the database files will be sent to your email address at set intervals. Advanced users can use WP-DBManager to run SQL queries against their WordPress database without the phpMyAdmin tool. There are other plugins that can save backups to Amazon S3 and Dropbox.

13. Debug Queries – Is your blog slow? Use the Debug Queries plugin plugin to determine which MySQL queries are taking more time to execute and thus slowing down the blog. Debug Bar is another related plugin org that shows PHP warnings, queries and other helpful debugging information in the WordPress admin bar.

14. Auto Post Thumbnail – WordPress added support for Post Thumbnail Images in WordPress 2.9 but if you have been using WordPress for long, thumbnails may not be associated with your old posts. Use the Auto Post thumbnail plugin to automatically generate thumbnails for such posts using the first image found in the post content.

15. Regenerate Thumbnails – When you change the default size (height and width) of post thumbnails (or featured images) on your blog, you can use this plugin to regenerate thumbnails with the new dimensions.

23. Login Logger – This plugin logs the IP address and the exact date & time when a user logs into your WordPress dashboard. It also keeps track of any unsuccessful login attempts. Use this plugin in combination with Limit Login Attempts to automatically lock out users after they have made ‘n’ unsuccessful login attempts.

Total Number of Internet Users in India

The media in India was reporting last month this supposedly feel-good story that the country now has 100 million active Internet users. But if you read more closely, you realized that they were defining ‘active’ as using the net once a month.

If you were counting only people who accessed the Internet at least once every other day, the number drops to 48 million. That’s 4 percent of the Indian population. On the other hand, India now has over 900 million mobile phone subscriptions.

Motorola Motoluxe launch in UK

Motorola has confirmed plans to launch the Motoluxe, a budget-friendly Android smartphone, in the UK towards the end of this month.


Designed to offer a mid-range alternative to the company's high-end Android offerings, the Motoluxe will retail for around £250 SIM-free and is likely to be made available free on contracts from the major mobile networks.

Based around an 800MHz processor with 300MB of memory, the Motoluxe isn't exactly a speed demon. It also uses Google's Android 2.3 'Gingerbread' operating system, rather than the latest - and much-improved - Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich' release.

The device does has its good points, however: the 4inh touchscreen boasts a respectable 480x854 resolution while the 122g weight and 9.8mm thickness make it pocket-friendly in both senses of the phrase. A smart status light in the bottom-left corner alerts to missed calls or new emails, too - a feature all too lacking from some companies' high-end handsets.

An eight-megapixel camera on the rear of the device includes a flash and video-capture capabilities. Motorola has also included its MotoSwitch user interface, which comes bundled with additional software include Social Graph for quick access to your most frequently used social networking contacts, MusicNow and Smart Gallery.

Motorola claims talk time of 6.5 hours on 2G or 4.5 hours on 3G from the 1400mAh battery, along with a standby time of between 400 and 450 hours. This will decrease if the in-built Bluetooth 3.0 or 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connections are active.

The Motoluxe is due to launch at the end of this month.

LG Optimus Vu

Aside from its name and the fact that it features an unorthodox 4:3 aspect ratio, nothing else can be gleaned from a newly uncovered YouTube video. That's not to say, however, that there are no other details to speak of.
A pair of tech blogs are separately reporting that the Optimus Vu is not only large, but also it can stand shoulder to shoulder with today's Android handsets.

Specifications for the LG smartphone are said to include a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 8GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, and NFC support. Expected to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the massive device appears to have the standard Android buttons across below the IPS display.

Speaking of that large screen, details indicate we're in for a 5-inch display with a 1024x768-pixel resolution. For the sake of comparison, Samsung's Galaxy Note has a 5.3-inch, 1,280x800 screen; however its 16:9 ratio makes for a thinner form factor.
As a reminder, Mobile World Congress is but three weeks away and already LG is tied to a number of unannounced handsets. With dual-core, quad-core, Ice Cream Sandwich, and this new massive smartphone, 2012 could be LG's year to make some noise.

Google Chrome For Android Devices

At long last, Google has released an Android version of the popular Chrome browser onto the Android Market as a beta for all Ice Cream Sandwich devices. Similar to it’s PC and Mac brethren, Google Chrome for Android focuses on bringing speed and simplicity to your browsing experience, as well as offering the ability to sync your bookmarks and history across devices.

As with most things Google brings to Android, Chrome has been re-built from the ground up to take full advantage of the smaller screens on our phones and tablets. Chrome for Android features gesture support to move from tab to tab, with support for an unlimited number of tabs so you can browse to your heart’s content. And yes, Incognito Mode will be supported from day one so you can browse those seedy sections of the internet without leaving (much of) a trace.

I think this device completely well built but if HTC gives new sense 3.5 then it get better user interface.
